Lionel Messi Leads Inter Miami to Historic First MLS Cup Title With Two Assists Against Vancouver Whitecaps
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Lionel Messi celebrated what he called a “beautiful, emotional moment” after guiding Inter Miami to their first-ever MLS Cup title with a 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday. Messi delivered two crucial assists, further solidifying his status as the club’s defining superstar and the most impactful signing in MLS history.
Messi’s Arrival Transforms Inter Miami
The win caps a remarkable transformation for Inter Miami, a club that was near the bottom of MLS standings before Messi’s arrival in July 2023. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has now earned 44 senior career trophies, including three with Inter Miami:
-
Leagues Cup (2023)
-
Supporters’ Shield (2024)
-
MLS Cup (2024)
Messi was named MLS Cup MVP, adding another milestone to a legendary career.
Speaking to ESPN, Messi said:
“It’s a beautiful, emotional moment for us and for the people of Miami. This club is still very new, but winning MLS was always the ultimate goal. Luckily, we achieved it at home, and we have to enjoy this moment.”
Inter Miami Takes Early Lead, Vancouver Strikes Back
In a sold-out Chase Stadium, Inter Miami opened the scoring early. In the 8th minute, a dangerous shot from Tadeo Allende deflected off Vancouver defender Édier Ocampo, resulting in an own goal past goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka.
Despite the early setback, the Vancouver Whitecaps grew into the game. Led by captain and Bayern Munich legend Thomas Müller, Vancouver controlled possession and threatened repeatedly through the first half. The pressure intensified after halftime, and their persistence was rewarded when Ali Ahmed scored in the 60th minute—his shot taking a late bounce that evaded Miami keeper Rocco Ríos Novo.
Messi and De Paul Shift the Momentum
With the game tied 1-1 and momentum shifting toward Vancouver, Messi stepped up. In the 71st minute, he intercepted the ball in the attacking half and delivered a perfectly timed pass to Rodrigo De Paul, who calmly finished to restore Miami’s lead.
Chants of “Messi! Messi!” echoed through Chase Stadium as fans sensed the match was turning decisively in Miami’s favor.
Vancouver pushed forward desperately in the final minutes, but Messi punished them again. In stoppage time, he provided a second assist—this time to Allende—who made it 3-1 in the 96th minute and sealed Miami’s championship.
Messi ended the playoffs with 15 goal contributions, the most in a single MLS postseason. Allende’s goal marked his ninth of the playoffs, setting another league record.
A Historic Night for Miami, Beckham, and MLS
The final whistle not only confirmed Inter Miami as MLS champions but also marked emotional farewells for two club legends: Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, both retiring after the match.
The victory also fulfilled a long-term dream for club co-owner David Beckham. His MLS contract upon retiring in 2013 allowed him to launch an expansion team at a discounted rate. Despite early struggles—delays, stadium issues, and logistical challenges—Inter Miami officially launched in 2020.
Now, they become the 16th team to win an MLS title in the league’s 30-year history. MLS continues its remarkable parity, with five different champions in the past five years.
Beckham reflected on the journey:
“It’s been an incredible journey.”
Messi’s Future With Inter Miami
At 38 years old, Messi continues to dominate MLS and appears poised to win back-to-back MVP awards. With a contract extending into his early 40s, he is far from slowing down. Next season, Inter Miami will move into their new, state-of-the-art stadium near Miami International Airport—with ambitions of securing back-to-back MLS Cup titles.
Beckham added:
“He’s not just here to enjoy life in Miami. Messi came here to win. His dedication, loyalty to his teammates, to the city, and to this club—Leo is a winner, simple as that.”
